Meet The Team

Position: Head of Community Development

Birthplace: Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Rugby League Background: Being raised in Barnsley I had little exposure to either code of rugby until I began work as an apprentice car mechanic in Wakefield where a colleague sparked my interest in Rugby League at the age of 18. Since then I have played for Oulton Raiders and more recently Sharlston Rovers. As well as playing I have done a lot of junior and community coaching as well as working within sports education, where I actively encouraged Rugby League participation and educated future coaches through lecturing on degree level programmes. I continue to play Rugby League and watch as many games as I can.

Job Role: As head of department I am responsible for the direction and strategy of the organisation.  A large element of my role currently is co-ordinating Sky Try, a truly exciting project helping more children and young people have fun, get active, grow in confidence and enjoy Rugby League.

Position: Community Development Officer

Birthplace: Batley

Rugby League Background: Initially I started playing rugby union at the age of 6 at Morley Rugby Union Club. I continued playing at Morley at both junior and youth level. I played Rugby League at Batley Boys A.R.L.F.C and progressed to play academy Rugby League at Batley R.L.F.C.

I started playing rugby largely due to being taken to watch Batley R.L.F.C. by my parents when I was still in a pram! I enjoyed watching it and it was a natural progression to start playing. At that time I just wanted to play and whether that was union or league it didn’t really matter.

I became a qualified Level 3 coach in Rugby League in my mid 20s. Previously I worked with the Bradford Bulls as a development coach, coached on the Bradford Bulls scholarship scheme, Service Areas, Yorkshire regional camps and Yorkshire girls Rugby League.

Job Role: My current role involves working with both Primary and Secondary schools. This work includes promoting, planning and delivering coaching, healthy lifestyles and literacy sessions. I also work closely with amateur clubs in the Kirklees area, developing pathways from local schools etc.

The coaching aspect also involves working and developing teachers and club coaches through the RFL model.

The impact of my work is shown in the children having fun and the increased participation levels at both school and club level.

Chris Cullimore

Position: Community Development Officer

Birthplace: Huddersfield

Rugby League Background: I started playing Rugby League aged six while I was at primary school. I received a flyer for my local amateur club Elland R.L.F.C and from my very first training session I was hooked on Rugby League. From the age of six I have then played rugby through all the age groups up to the open age. I have been lucky enough to play for the Huddersfield Giants Under 21s as well as playing at Huddersfield New College, King Cross, Stainland and Sheffield Hallam Eagles.

When I was at university I was lucky enough to do a voluntary placement with the Huddersfield Giants and the community team, from doing this placement I then always wanted to get a job with my hometown Club delivering Rugby League and luckily for me this is something that has happened, as I now work for the Community team and still volunteer with the Scholarship set up.

Job Role: My role within the Community team is to go out into primary and high schools and get Rugby League and the Huddersfield Giants out there, engage children within our great sport and to hopefully turn them into Giants supporters. I also try and get children from primary and high schools to go and play for their local amateur club and hopefully one day even into the Giants shirt! As part of my role I also have to lead and provide support on numerous programmes like our holiday rugby camps, our Embed the Pathway camps. I am also the lead on Touch Rugby which is a social evening on Wednesday nights at the Zone, designed for people to have fun while doing some exercise in the form of Rugby League.

Position: Community Development Officer

Rugby League Background:  I first started playing rugby for Newsome Panthers JARLFC when I was 7 years old after going to watch a number of games with my Grandad who introduced me to the sport.  From the age of 7, I have played every age group at Newsome all the way through to Open Age. Other than, Newsome Panthers, I have played at St Josephs, Barnsley Broncos, Kirklees Service Area, Greenhead College and Liverpool John Moores University. Amongst these teams I was selected by Huddersfield Giants and played for both the Under 18’s and Reserve teams during my time there.

Due to injuries I had to take time away from playing and decided to take up coaching Rugby League, completing my Level 2 Rugby League coaching badge. I began coaching Newsome Panthers Open Age before taking up an opportunity to start coaching one of the junior clubs within Newsome Panthers.

Job Role: My role is to go out into primary and secondary schools within Kirklees, aiming to raise enthusiasm and participation within Rugby League and the Huddersfield Giants.  The aim is to engage children within the sport, getting them playing the game away from school and in turn supporting Huddersfield Giants. Working within schools allows the opportunity to upskill teachers so that they feel comfortable and confident in delivering rugby league alone.

Part of my role also allows me to visit local amateur clubs and assist their sessions sharing good practice and raising the profile of Huddersfield Giants. Other responsibilities include coaching on numerous programmes like our holiday rugby camps and The Evolution Pathway development programme.
