The Easter Monday Super League fixture saw the Giants travel to the Halliwell-Jones Stadium Warrington without the services of the injured Leroy Cudjoe, Tom Symonds, Ukuma Ta’ai and Michael Lawrence but looking to redress a 6 match spell without a victory.
Two early penalties conceded put them on the back foot and were the preface to a try on the left to Harvey Livett with Declan Patton missing the conversion. When the Giants then had possession of the ball a late tackle on Lee Gaskell was placed on report with the Giants player having to leave the field but it was not long before the Giants scored, quick passing to the left enabling Darnell McIntosh touching down wide out with Danny Brough missing the conversion. The Giants were conceding too many penalties giving field position to the Wolves and when a loose ball was snapped up by the home side in the Giants 20 Daryl Clark took advantage to touch down between the the posts, Declan Patton adding the the extras. The Giants though were looking good on attack and quickly responded with Kruise Leeming bursting through from halfway in centre field and handing on to Jake Mamo who scorched over between the posts for a fine try. Danny Brough’s conversion levelled the scores. High kicks from Gidley were proving difficult for the Giants but on the half hour they took the lead with a Danny Brough penalty goal only for that to be snatched away from them 6 minutes later following yet another penalty Kurt Gidley taking advantage to touch down with Declan Patton’s conversion giving his side a 4 point interval lead.
A 7 – 3 penalty count had weighed heavily against the Giants in that first half but on attack the Giants had looked dangerous and fully capable of getting a result.
Both sides made errors at the beginning of the second half until on 48 minutes a Danny Brough 40/20 set up field position for the Giants and when play was taken to some 5 metres from the Wolves goal line Danny Brough nipped over from dummy half and added the extras to his try. On 59 minutes a Danny Brough long distance penalty goal stretched the Giants lead to 4 points but 2 tries in 3 minutes to the Wolves swung the scoreline back in favour of the home side, Rhys Evans and Toby King being the try scorers with Patton adding the extras to the second try and putting his side 6 points to the good. As the clock ticked down the Wolves made a couple of unsuccessful drop goal attempts. The Giants continued to press and finally with only seconds left swift passing to the right gave Jermaine McGillvary the chance to power over in the right corner. Danny Brough needed a touchline conversion to salvage a point for the Giants as the full time hooter had now sounded but agonisingly it shaved the upright and the point was lost.
This had been a much better Giants performance than recent weeks and with better first half discipline and the benefit of several 50/50 calls success may well have been achieved.
Next week end sees the Giants in Challenge Cup action at the John Smith’s Stadium with Swinton Lions being the opponents and a 12.30pm kick off.
