Report

Lee Gaskell coming in for hamstring injury victim Jordan Turner was the only change in the Giants team which comprehensively defeated Catalan Dragons last time out for the visit of St Helens to the John Smith’s Stadium in a fixture re-arranged when Huddersfield Town played at Wembley in the SkyBet football Championship Final.

The game began at a fast pace with the Giants enjoying the bulk of possession and field position courtesy of a series of errors by St Helens but without being able to break through a strong Saints defence until the 14th minute when Martin Ridyard’s long pass put Leroy Cudjoe over for the first score of the game, Ridyard adding the extras. The Giants suffered a blow on 34 minutes when Jake Mamo had to leave the field with a foot injury but extended their lead 3 minutes later. After Dale Ferguson had been held on the line Danny Brough’s grubber kick to the ingoal area was touched down by Martyn Ridyard who also added the extras. Just as it seemed that the Giants would have a 12 point interval lead against the run of play Morgan Knowles broke through down centre field and the supporting Luke Thompson touched down between the posts with Mark Percival adding the extras.

THe Giants would be disappointed to have only a 6 point advantage at the break having dominated the half but credit to the Saints for an outstanding defensive display.

The late Saints first half try had buoyed the Merseyside club at the beginning of the second half and on 43 minutes they closed the gap with a Mark Percival try in the left corner after Jermaine McGillvary had lost possession in his own 40. The goal kick failed  but the margin was now only 2 points. The game ebbed to and fro as both sides strove to gain the ascendancy and Lee Gaskell had to show considerable bravery to dive on a Saints kick through which threatened the Giants line and then on 55 minutes Sebastine Ikahihifo made a break towards the Saints posts and on the resulting play the ball Adam O’Brien plunged over from dummy half for a try converted by Martyn Ridyard. A Mark Percival tackle on Kruise Leeming resulted in the Giants player leaving the field for an assessment, the incident being placed on report by referee James Child. A Matty Smith high kick was well defended by the Giants as the game entered its final quarter and on 66 minutes the Saints hit back again with a Kyle Amor try by the posts, Mark Percival converting. The Giants though were determined to see this out and roared on by a vociferous Giants support they re-established their 8 point lead on 71 minutes. Lee Gaskell plunged over by the posts after a Danny Brough kick had forced a goal line drop out. Martyn Ridyard again obliged with the conversion.
There were to be no further scores and the game ended with a Giants victory which moved them up to7th in the Super League table with 5 more games to go before the cut-off point, the top 8 contesting the play off positions and the bottom 4 joining the Qualifiers with the top 4 Championship teams to determine who plays in Super League next year.

It had been a high intensity encounter with the Saints much stronger in the second half. Overall though the Giants deserved the win with everyone having given their all to ensure victory. More of the same will be required next time out on Friday 23 June against Wigan Warriors at the John Smith’s Stadium kick off 8.00pm.
