Report

The last match of the 2017 season for the Giants brought Play-off semi-finalists Leeds Rhinos to the John Smith’s Stadium as their opponents. Sam Rapira was making his last appearance in a claret and gold shirt whilst Jared Simpson was making his first appearance of the season in place of the injured Jermaine McGillvary.

The game began disastrously for the Giants, conceding a try inside 2 minutes. The Giants lost possession on the second tackle of the game and the Rhinos quickly moved the ball to the right where Kalum Watkins went over for a try to which he added the extras. The score visibly shook the Giants but gradually they got into the game with Danny Brough’s kicks gaining field position. They had 2 opportunities to score on 14 minutes following a penalty but on each occasion the ball was lost 10 metres out and 3 minutes later  Danny McGuire took advantage spotting a gap in the Giants defence on the right and racing away for an opportunist try, Kalum Watkins missing the conversion attempt. 5 minutes later the Rhinos lead was stretched with Keinhorst touching down a grubber to the ingoal area, Watkins this time adding the extra 2 points. The Giants then began to show glimpses of their true capabilities with a spell of pressure inside the Rhinos 20 and on 26 minutes registered their first score of the evening, Michael Lawrence touching down a grubber to the line with Danny Brough adding the extras. As half time approached  more pressure on the Rhinos defence was exerted but good defence held them out and the hooter came with the Rhinos 10 points to the good.

The Rhinos fully deserved their interval lead, their 3 tries taking maximum advantage of Giants errors and defensive deficiencies.

The Giants began the second half strongly, Ryan Hinchcliffe almost getting over but the Rhinos defence held out and 15 minutes in on their first attack of the half Danny McGuire struck again going over for his second try of the evening, Kalum Watins converting. On 61 minutes Anthony Mullally exposed disappointing Giants defence to touch down between the posts. Watkins added the extras and also kicked a penalty goal on 66 minutes to take the Rhinos score to 30. Darnell McIntosh gave Giants supporters something to cheer with a fine 40 metre break as the Giants sought to get some reward for their endeavours and Ryan Hinchcliffe went over on an angled run to score by the the posts, Danny Brough converting, but the Rhinos had the last score, Rob Burrow touching down after a Ryan Hall break down the left touchline. Kalum Watkins added his 6th goal of the evening, so the Giants season ended in disappointment.

It has been a difficult season for the Giants with injuries disrupting the team from Round 1 right through to the final match. Youngsters though have been blooded and have gained experience which should stand them in good stead for the future. The results starting with the Magic Weekend up to the Super 8s showed the potential of the side and give much encouragement for next season.
