Full Time Report

Round 5 of the Super8s saw the Giants make the short journey to Castleford to the Mend-a-Hose Jungle to take on Top 4 team Castleford Tigers looking for a return to winning ways after last week’s narrow defeat at Warrington. The Giants got off to a rousing start with an Adam O’Brien try on the first set of tackles; Danny Brough’s high kick to the left corner was spilled by Greg Eden and from the resultant play O’Brien went over, the video referee confirming. Danny Brough added the extras. The Tigers quickly responded, a fast flowing move putting Greg Eden over in the left corner, Paul McShane failing with the conversion. A short Danny Brough pass then sent Jake Wardle away down the left on a 40 meter run before he fed Innes Senior who could not though keep out of touch. The lead was extended however shortly afterwards when Lee Gaskell cut clean through the Tigers defence to touch down between the posts with Danny Brough adding the extras. The deficit was reduced on 24 minutes when McMeeken held off several Giants defenders inside the 20 before slipping a pass to Jake Webster who powered over, Paul McShane adding the extras. A succession of penalties then followed putting the Giants defence on overtime and it was no surprise when it finally cracked after a 90 meter run by Jake Mamo had been ruled out for a ball steal by Andy Rankin. The resulting penalty saw Junior Moors power over to edge the Tigers in front and Paul McShane’s conversion doubled the advantage.

It had been a keenly contested first half with the Giants starting very well but the penalties conceded towards the end of the half had put a huge strain on their defence.

The second half began with the Giants pressing, Jordan Turner being held up over the line. It was to prove his last major contribution to the game as on 53 minutes he was helped off the field with a leg injury. 4 minutes later Clare went over for the Tigers on the right, Paul McShane’s conversion putting the Tigers 10 points to the good. The Giants were now though visibly running out of steam and the last 15 minutes saw the Tigers run in further tries to McMeeken, Moors, Mata’utia and Millington, McShane converting the first 3 tries and Webster failing with the last try.

In the end a convincing Tigers victory but the Giants had fought hard and will now look forward to the visit of Wigan Warriors to the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday next 20 September 2018 kick off 7.45pm.
