Full Time Report

A late Paul Aiton try snatched a 28-24 victory for Leeds Rhinos against Huddersfield Giants.

Kyle Wood and Michael Lawrence made their first Super League appearances of the season from the bench at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium as the Giants sought a first victory of the league campaign with Luke Robinson and Chris Bailey missing out.

The Rhinos took an early lead after Brett Ferres had been penalised for holding down, Carl Ablett forcing his way over through the Giants defensive line on 6 minutes with Kevin Sinfield’s conversion going in off the post.

Both sides were guilty of handling errors and penalties against the Giants were causing them to yield field position. The pressure and defensive lapses eventually took their toll, with the Rhinos crossing for tries on the 23rd and 25th minutes through Alex Cuthbertson and Ryan Hall, with Sinfield adding the conversion to each try.

With 30 minutes gone and the Rhinos seemingly in control the game suddenly took a complete change in momentum. Consecutive penalties to the Giants after four had been conceded by them prior to this gave the Giants field position and they took full advantage to cross for tries on the 31st and 36th minutes - Jamie Ellis getting the first showing neat footwork to breach the Rhinos defence and Joe Wardle going over for the second after a clever switch of the point of attack in the 20-metre area.

Danny Brough added the extras to each try to reduce the deficit to six points and it might have been better for the Giants on the stroke of half-time when Joe Wardle was adjudged to have lost possession of the ball as he was held up just short of the line.

The Giants had started the match badly with defensive errors costing them dear but they had shown commendable resilience to fight back into the game and had finished the half in the ascendancy.

The second half began badly for the Giants with the Rhinos adding to their lead within 45 seconds of the restart. Steve Ward took advantage of a defensive lapse down the centre to burst away on a 40 metre run, Tom Briscoe finishing off for the try.

The game then swung to and fro with the Giants nearest to a score, Jermaine McGillvary being denied a try in the corner by the video referee who ruled that his elbow had grounded in touch before the ball had been touched down and then a superb Craig Huby tackle on Zak Hardaker denied the Rhinos.

With 64 minutes gone the game took another twist. In the space of 5 minutes the Giants had overturned the deficit and taken the lead. First, Kyle Wood crossed after a Leroy Cudjoe kick to the in goal area and then Brett Ferres was the scorer after excellent passing and support play. Danny Brough added the extras to each try, his second goal taking him to 3000 point in his Rugby League career.

With five minutes remaining the game swung back to the Rhinos. A somewhat controversial call by the match officials when the ball went into touch off Leroy Cudjoe as the ball was kicked against him five metres from the goal line and he was adjudged to have played at it giving head and feed to the Rhinos on the resulting scrum. From the ensuing play Paul Aiton exploited a gap in the defence to touch down, Kevin Sinfield adding the extras. There was still time for the Giants, a burst down the centre giving hope but the ball went to ground and the chance had gone.
