Full Time Report

Huddersfield Giants captain Danny Brough inspired his side to a 29-10 win over Warrington Wolves.

The Giants stand-off caused the Wolves problems all night with his kicking, and along with two tries from Aaron Murphy, helped the Giants record a superb win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The Giants got the first points of the game in the sixth minute after good work from scrum-half Jamie Ellis, who followed up his own clever grubber kick to touch down just to the lefts of the posts. Brough added the extras to give the Giants an early 6-0 lead.

Warrington came back strongly, forcing a number of repeat sets close to the Giants line but were unable to break through a resolute Claret and Gold defence.

The score stayed the same until 30 seconds before the break when Brough kicked a drop goal to send the visitors into the break 7-0 up after a strong first half showing.

And the second half started just as well for the Giants, as a chip over the top by Brough bounced perfectly for Aaron Murphy to beat Stefan Ratchford to the ball and extend the Giants’ lead. Brough added the extras to make it 13-0.

Warrington didn’t take long to hit back however, as in the 47th minute Gareth O’Brien took an inside ball from half-back partner Chris Bridge to go over for the Wolves’ first try. The scrum-half converted his own try.

The hosts then cut the gap further shortly after the hour mark as Kevin Penny went in at the corner, but the Giants hit back five minutes later through Murphy, as the winger again got on the end of a Brough kick in the left corner to put the Giants 17-10 ahead with 12 minutes remaining.

Jermaine McGillvary put distance between the two sides with five minutes left on the clock as he intercepted a Daryl Clark pass on the halfway line to race 50 metres and score the Giants’ fourth try.

And with less than a minute left on the clock Eorl Crabtree forced his way over from close range to wrap up the win for the Giants, with Brough adding his fourth conversion of the night after the hooter.
