Crabtree hopeful to be fit for new season

Foster Care

Huddersfield Giants icon Eorl Crabtree insists his respective shoulder and elbow surgeries were a success and is hopeful he will be fit for the start of the Giants Super League 2013 campaign.

Crabtree was one of the stand-out performers for the Claret and Gold last season and his nonstop exerts on the field had an impact on the giant 6ft 6in prop meaning surgery was his only option.

The 30-year-old had surgery a month ago and Crabtree is pleased that both operations went well although his shoulder will not be completely recovered for another few months, while his elbow will be ready to go in a few weeks.

Crabtree commented:  “Both operations have been very successful. I had my shoulder operation about four weeks ago, but that injury will last around three months before it will be completely recovered.

“My left elbow is a bit of a mess, but hopefully it will be just four weeks and that will be good to go to, he admitted.

“I am enjoying the rest the surgery has given me, but at the same time I am trying to get my rehab done so I will be ready for the start of the new season, he continued.

“Fortunately I am now in recovery and I am able to move around and do things as I would have liked to have done. I can’t lift any weights, which is massively disappointing, but keeping fit is the biggest thing for me.”

Despite the success of the operation, Crabtree admits his elbow will be an ongoing problem and another operation at the end of next season will be needed.

“It needs another operation just to get it right, but I can’t do that until the end of next year. I will be strapped up all year again so expect to see some bandages, but that won’t stop me from putting my body on the line for the team.”

Crabtree was obviously disappointed to miss out on the chance to represent his country in the recent autumn internationals, but the Giants will benefit having a fresh Eorl Crabtree firing in the forward line.

“England was a double edge sword really because mentally and physically I felt like I really needed the rest and at the same time I really want to hang out with the England boys, ‘ripping in’ for them and I wanted to put in some solid performances to cement my place in the World Cup next year, but fortunately I have a year of Super League games to do that with the Giants.”

He continued: “I had the best year of my career so far last season even though I have had these injuries for a while now, so it will be good to move on and not playing for England means I will definitely be fresh going into the new season.”
