Huddersfield Giants will play Catalans Dragons on Sunday 21st May at St. James’ Park for the Dacia Magic Weekend, kick-off 1pm.

Last year the Giants ran out 48-20 winners over St. Helens and Ryan Hinchcliffe is hoping to create more special memories in Newcastle this year:

“I think last year was a real highlight for myself, there wasn’t too many highlights last year to be honest. It was a really good experience running out here on a real warm day, I think there was about 25,000 to 30,000 people here and the way the stadium is designed the fans are right on top of you. So it was a really good experience for myself and we played quite well that day so I’ve got good memories of coming here.”

“I just think it was something different, it was a game that’s really easy to get up for because of your surroundings with a big crowd and a lot of noise, as I said the sun was shining on that day and it was a bit of a party atmosphere from the fans. We turned up and played well but that doesn’t mean much when we run out here on Sunday, we need to make sure that we have good preparation and come out and play well again.”

Reflecting on the past few results Hinchcliffe insists Catalans will provide another stern test:

“One thing I do know about Catalans, having played them a few times is that they’ve got a lot of good individual players, they’re a good side, don’t worry about that and don’t look too much into their last match in the Challenge Cup at the weekend. They’re a quality side and they’ve got quality halves, good strong forwards and quality outside backs so they’re a quality side across the field and like any side they’ve got a few injuries, so do we. We know that they’re going to turn up and play well so we’ll have to play our best game to be able to beat them.”

“For us it’s just about making sure we worry about ourselves and not what other people think so that it doesn’t concern us too much. We just need to get our own back yard in order and generally we do that, we put in a good performance and I think our last two weeks have not been too bad. We played Leeds and won and I thought against Castleford a couple of weeks ago we turned up and did okay and probably should have won that game in the end. But Cas found a way to beat us and that’s disappointing but we need to build on that momentum and that mentality we’ve had in the last couple of weeks and if we can do that and have a good preparation then we can come out and play well.”

With the recent signing of half-back Martyn Ridyard on loan from Leigh Centurions, Hinchcliffe is looking forward to seeing his new teammate in action:

“I think it just adds a little bit of direction for us, we were a little bit thin in the halves position. He’s played a lot of footy, not Super League footy, but he’s played a lot of games for Leigh, he’s been around for a while and we just need someone to give a bit of direction for us. He’s obviously got a decent kicking game on him, which is very important in today’s game so it’ll be good to have him in the team and I hope he enjoys his time at the Giants.”
