Huddersfield Giants were proud to host a junior Rugby League tournament in honour of Ronan Costello at the Leeds Road playing fields.

Giantsrl.com caught up with Player Performance Manager Steve Hardisty was pleased with how the celebration turned out:

“I’m really, really happy with how the event went. Obviously, it was the first year that we tried this and I thought it was a fitting tribute to Ronan.

“It’s been a tough week. It’s been in the back of all our minds what with the date coming up. We were all really keen for the date not to just pass without doing something significant to show the importance of the date.

“At the event I mentioned that Ronan lived his life dedicating it to be a professional rugby league player and all of his attributes reflected that.

“What underpinned everything was his love of the sport and what was so nice to see was his legacy which inspired so many kids to play last Wednesday night.”

An Under 7’s, 8’s and 9’s tournaments took place with more than 250 participating across the night.

Children, along with their parents, also had the chance to meet their favourite Giants players at the event where they helped and joined in across the different matches. Head Coach Rick Stone also took part as a Coach and Referee on one pitch.

Hardisty continued:

“It was such a warm atmosphere. Ronan’s Grandad Senan was there and a couple of his extended family. As well as his Auntie Susan who keeps in regular contact with us which was really nice.

“Through various social media outlets, they passed on their thanks to the effort what a lot of people went to keep his legacy alive.

“To say the event only incorporates the ambassador clubs, the amount of kids who were there were tremendous. The likes of Rick, the head coach, was down there refereeing.

“I just thought it was a real club event and everybody bought in to it. It was great to see so many kids play rugby league.”

The Giants First Team and Academy squads were in attendance along with a number of former players and staff including Gareth Carvell, Robert Hicks and Rugby legend Jason Robinson also showing their support:

“I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone. It was such a good evening and we’re determined to make it bigger and better next year, please look out for more details to come.

“Peoples generosity just ceases to amaze me. Things like the London marathon, the couple of triathlons, the bike ride to the Magic Weekend… people’s generosity is just tremendous.

“It’s well documented that the rugby league is a small family and that they all pull together in tragedy. It’s just a testament to all the followers of the sport.”
