GIANTS BEATEN BY TRINITY

Huddersfield Giants 10-36 Wakefield Trinity

Leroy Cudjoe and Dale Ferguson mad welcome returns to the Giants side after long injury absences in the West Yorkshire derby at the Mobile Rocket Stadium Wakefield against Wakefield Trinity on a warm sunny evening seeking to get back to winning ways to improve their League position.

Wakefield had the better of the early exchanges aided by the Giants kicking the ball out on the full on the start but on their first real attack on the Trinity defences Ikahihifo and Gaskell set up the position for Jordan Turner to make a crossfield run and grubber for Alex Mellor to touch down by the posts for a well worked try, Lee Gaskell adding the extras.

The restart kick was however spilled by the Giants in their 20 and Randell took full advantage by charging over by the posts , Brough’s conversion levelling the scores. A succession of penalties and errors incurred by the Giants put them under pressure and gave Danny Brough the opportunity to land a couple of penalty goals and a 4 point lead with 22 minutes gone.

On 27 minutes the Giants hit back, Lee Gaskell’s lobbed pass putting Louis Senior over in the right corner for a try which Lee Gaskell could not convert. A pivotal moment came on 34 minutes with the sinbinning of Aaron Murphy for preventing Trinity taking a tap on the home 20 after Innes Senior’s kick had rolled dead. Trinity immediately attacked  and although the Giants held them out initially on the stroke of half time they capitulated   after conceding a goal line drop out with Randell going over by the posts, Brough adding the extras and giving his side a 6 point advantage  at the hooter.

Discipline had been a serious first half problem for the Giants and there was no real improvement in the second half. Danny Brough’s drop goal on 44 minutes stretched the lead to 7 points after Dale Ferguson had left the field for a concussion assessment.

On 47 minutes Jordan Crowther went over for a try which Danny Brough could not convert and on the hour Ryan Hamshire kicked a penalty goal as the Giants continued to concede penalties. Further tries were scored on 71 and 72 minutes by Miller and Randell with Hampshire adding the extras and a final score came on 75 minutes with a Miller drop goal to complete a thoroughly miserable evening for the Giants the result plunging them into the midst of the relegation battle.

Much better will be needed next time out on 4 July at Salford kick off 7.45pm.
