Story of the Game

On Friday night, the Giants headed to Wakefield to face Trinity at the Mobile Rocket Stadium, with both teams desperate for the two points to drag themselves away from the relegation scrap.

Prior to the game, Trinity had not won any of their last six games in all competitions, whilst we had won two of our last five, but have lost the last three.

We took the lead in West Yorkshire in the 8th minute. The ball was thrown from right to left, Jordan Turner then ran back across the field before kicking the ball through for Alex Mellor, he picked it up cleanly and scored underneath the sticks. Lee Gaskell added the extra two points to give us an early 6-0 lead.

Trinity hit back three minutes later. Tyler Randell scoring the first of his three tries in the game. A smart dummy from dummy half saw a gap open up in front of him, and he pounced to go over next to the sticks. Danny Brough’s conversion levelled the scores at 6-6. Brough then also added two quick-fire penalties for the hosts to put them 10-6 up.

We hit back once again, just before the half-hour mark. Gaskell threw a great cut-out pass over multiple Trinity players and it allowed Louis Senior to score in the right corner to level the scores. Gaskell couldn’t add the conversion from the right touchline, so it remained 10-10.

Trinity then re-took the lead on the half-time hooter. Ryan Hampshire offloaded to Randell 20 metres out, and he escaped a tackle before scoring. Brough’s conversion gave Trinity a one-try lead at the break, 16-10 was the score at half-time.

The hosts then scored 20 unanswered second half points. Five minutes after the break, Brough kicked a drop-goal to make it a two-score lead. The former Giant then turned provider. It was his pass at the line that allowed Jordan Crowther to stroll in and extended their lead. The conversion was missed, so the score remained 21-10. Ryan Hampshire then added a 61st minute penalty to make it 23-10, an error from the Giants on half-way then allowed Jacob Miller to pick the ball up, and he raced away to further extend Trinity’s lead. Hampshire’s conversion made it 29-10. We then went short from the following kick-off to try and win the ball back, but the ball bounced into the hands of Randell, and he raced 60 metres to complete his hattrick. Hampshire’s conversion made it 35-10 with just over five minutes remaining. Miller then added Trinity’s second drop-goal of the evening with five minutes remaining, as the game ended 36-10 to the hosts.

What it means

Following the result, Giants now sit in 10th place, level in points with the London Broncos, Hull KR and the Leeds Rhinos on 14 points as we enter a crucial phase of the season. On the other hand, Trinity now sit four points above the bottom four clubs, and only two points off the playoffs.
