RESILIENT GIANTS FALL SHORT

Huddersfield Giants 12-32 Salford Red Devils

Sebastine Ikahihifo replaced the suspended Adam Walne and Tom Holmes replaced Matt Frawley for the Giants trip to the AJ Bell Stadium in another relegation battle on a breezy damp Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils enjoyed the better field position of the early exchanges and took the lead with a Krisnan Inu penalty goal when Kruise Leeming was penalised for a push after completion of a tackle and extended the lead on 15 minutes after forcing a goal line drop out with Logan Tomkins forcing his way over between the posts for a try, Inu adding the extras. With the benefit of a succession of penalties the Giants began to get back in the game and a Tom Holmes break promised a score but the defence managed to cover. The field position gained though led to a try on the left for Darnell McIntosh and although the conversion attempt failed in the windy conditions Oliver Russell added a penalty goal some 5 minutes later to reduce the deficit to just 2 points. It was a tough encounter with the Giants at this stage enjoying the bulk of field position until the last minutes of the half when a needless penalty was incurred and Inu kicked a goal to extend the Red Devils lead to 4 points at the break.

A succession of handling errors had interrupted the flow of the game throughout the half but the Giants could be satisfied with their work rate and general performance in the windy conditions.

The Giants started the second half strongly and on 50 minutes took the lead, a flowing passing move to the right and a delicate Louis Senior kick to the ingoal area being touched down by Oliver Russell for a well –worked try. The try scorer’s conversion put the Giants in the lead by 2 points and was the signal for an all out attack on the Giants defence. Matty English had to come off for assessment after a head knock followed by an injury to Oliver Roberts and on 65 minutes a handling error 20 metres out led to a try between the posts for Mark Flanagan goaled by Krisnan Inu. On 74 minutes a Krisnan Inu penalty goal for a high tackle extended the lead and the last few minutes saw the Giants in disarray conceding another penalty goal fo Inu  and tries for Lolohea and Inu both converted by Inu and a final score of 32 – 12 in favour of the Red Devils. After a promising first half and second half up to 65 minutes the Giants had fallen apart in the later stages dropping them deep into the relegation battle. Next up for the Giants is the visit of Castleford Tigers to the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday 18 August kick off 3.00pm.
