Reload: Giants 40-0 Wakefield

A special night, a special victory.

After a great season in 2013, the Giants had the chance to lift the League Leaders Shield against Wakefield Trinity at the John Smith’s Stadium. A very special night for us, winning the League Leaders Shield for the first time ever.

It didn’t take us long to take the lead. Jason Chan touched down after an offload close to the Trinity line by hooker, Shaun Lunt. Danny Brough kicked the extras, as we got off to a quick start.

Eight minutes later and the lead was doubled. Luke Robinson played a smart pass to Brett Ferres, and he strolled over the try-line to make it 10-0. Brough added his second conversion of the game to make it 12-0.

Chan then added his second try just before the half hour mark, once again Lunt was involved in the build-up. Lunt passed right to Chan five metres from the line, and the former Papua New Guinea international powered his way over from close range. Brough maintained his 100% record with the boot to make it 18-0, and that is how the score remained until after the break.

The Giants picked up were we left off in the first half. Two minutes into it, Aaron Murphy went in at the left corner after a pass by Joe Wardle. Brough missed his first conversion of the game from the left touchline, so the score remained 22-0.

Four minutes later, Jermaine McGillvary strolled in to get his first try of the game. Brough converted the try to make it 28-0. It took another 25 minutes before we scored again, and it was that man McGillvary who got his second of the game. Leroy Cudjoe passed the ball wide to his winger, and Jerry broke some tackles before powering his way over the Trinity line, to further increase our lead. Brough added the extras again to make it 34-0, with less than ten minutes left.

Shaun Lunt then scored on the full-time hooter, as the Giants won our first ever League Leaders Shield at the John Smith’s Stadium, after a superb season. We finished one point ahead of the second placed Warrington Wolves, winning 21 of our 27 games in the 2013 Betfred Super League season.
