Megretton provides Academy update

By Toby Morley

Ahead of the Giants Academy’s next fixture against Hull KR on 16th July at Laund Hill in the Academy Championship, Huddersfield Giants Head Academy Strength & Conditioner, Adam Megretton, has provided an update on the processes and work the Academy have gone through this season.

“A normal in season week the players will get 2 gym sessions sometimes 3 depending when we are playing” said Megretton, “The lads will have a session on Monday and Wednesday and possibly Friday if playing at the weekend”

“After a game, the playing squad will have a recovery session which involves going as heavy as they feel they can. Wednesday would be the main session involving lower body and upper body lifts to improve strength.

“The session can depend on what type of player it is, 1st year or 2nd year to manage the players correctly. If there is a Friday session it will be a power based session which is low volume but intense and working on moving the weights fast.”

The Giants face the Robins in the Academy Championship with the two sides separated by just one position and three points, with the Giants looking to bounce back from a defeat last time out against Warrington. Megretton said that the break between games has allowed the squad to complete a ‘mini preseason’ in the fortnight leading into the home fixture:

“We have just had our summer break and now the lads are back. It's like a mini preseason for these 2 weeks leading up to the game. It’s a chance to get 6/7 decent sessions which are intense, knowing we don’t have game’s at the weekend. Then the week before the game the sessions will be shortened up to keep the lads as fresh as possible.”
