Match Preview | Warrington Wolves

Ahead of our home opener, we are going to preview Daryl Powell's Wolves as they head to the John Smith's Stadium on Friday!

Giants Squad News

With the Giants sitting out Round 1 due to St Helens involvement in the World Club Challenge, Ian Watson's men open their Betfred Super League account at home to Warrington Wolves.

The Giants will be looking for a strong start, as they look to build on the success of last season's top 3 finish in the league, and a superb home record at the John Smith's Stadium.

Ian Watson will look to select a strong side from his 31-Man Squad, with the only notable absentees being Jake Connor and Sam Halsall who will sit Round 2 out.

The Opposition Team

Warrington got their season off to a flyer at home to Leeds Rhinos, as they demolished Rohan Smith's beaten Grand Finalist's 42-10, in a superb opening Round performance.

Seven different try scorers saw Ben Currie, Daryl Clark, Josh Thewlis, Sam Kasiano, Danny Walker, James Harrison and Greg Minikin all crossed as The Wire saw off Leeds.

Daryl Powell's men will be looking for a much better season, after their 11th placed finish last season and will arrive at the John Smith's Stadium full of confidence after their opening round win.

The Giants will have to be at their very best to beat a spirited Wolves side, with the only notable absentees for Warrington being new recruit Josh McGuire who's suspended, and Gil Dudson who suffered a broken thumb in pre-season.

Key Men

Warrington boast an experienced Super League team, with a strong middle unit consisting of Paul Vaughan, one of the most eye-catching overseas recruits to date.

After over 200 games in the NRL, Vaughan made the move to The Wolves in the off-season and impressed fans in the first game, as he played a monster 61 minutes, with 24 carries.

They also have some youthful strike power out wide, in Josh Thewlis and Matty Ashton. Both wingers and with a knack of scoring tries, as Giants fans will know with Ashton scoring 2 in our 32-22 win over the Wolves in 2022.

Last Season

As shown in the graphic below, we defeated Warrington both times at home, the first being a 32-22 victory, and then closely edging out a thriller 38-36.

We will be looking to continue our excellent form at home to Warrington when we welcome Daryl Powell's men to the John Smith's Stadium on Friday evening.
