Match Report | Warrington Wolves

Huddersfield Giants were defeated on their opening Super League game 16-26 by Warrington Wolves, despite a late flurry of tries from Will Pryce and Kevin Naiqama.

Giants started the match strong, with back-to-back sets on the Wire line, but couldn’t make the breakthrough as Warrington stood firm.

The points then came for the visitors, as a slick kick in-behind from Josh Drinkwater saw Peter Mata’utia score the first try of the game.

Warrington were then awarded a penalty, and elected to kick for goal, with Stefan Ratchford slotting over the two.

Ian Watson’s searched for the breakthrough, with multiple sets on the Warrington whitewash, but after Jermaine McGillvary came close on multiple occasions, on his 300th Giants appearance, the visitors defence stood strong.

Giants searched for the score, through Joe Greenwood and Matty English, who both went close as they crashed into the visitors defence, but Daryl Powell's men stood firm despite heavy Giants pressure in the first half.

That was how the score would stay going into the break, after the Giants grew into the game, with debutant Kevin Naiqama breaking through on the hooter, but was stopped just short and Warrington took the lead into the shed’s 0-8.

After the interval, it was to be Warrington who crashed over again for a second score, extending their lead.

James Harrison took advantage of a crash ball from towering forward Sam Kasiano and slid over next to the posts, with Stefan Ratchford once again converting.

The pressure would tell eventually, as an inventive play from Nathan Peats on the last tackle saw him slip the ball to Joe Greenwood, who crashed over to get the giants first try of the season.

Both teams battled out a bruising 10-minute period, but Warrington would come out the strongest, crossing again through speedy winger Matty Ashton who scored in the corner.

Ashton then crossed for his second of the night in similar fashion, picking up a loose ball and racing the length of the field to score and seal the game for Daryl Powell’s men.

Huddersfield did get two scores late on, through Will Pryce and another debutant man Kevin Naiqama but it was too late, as Warrington took home the two points.

Attendance was 7731, thank you for your support.
