Full Time Report

Huddersfield Giants ran out 24-12 winners against Widnes Vikings in the Claret and Gold’s first Super League victory of 2015.

Scott Grix made his first appearance of the season with Jake Connor missing out as the Giants sought their first victory of the campaign, Widnes Vikings being their opponents at the John Smith’s Stadium, the visitors arriving on the back of a resounding success against the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last time out.

The blustery conditions were likely to prove difficult for the teams, but after the Giants had forced an early goal line drop-out it was the Vikings who settled first and they took a 10th minute lead, Joe Mellor scoring a fine individual try in a 30-metre run to the line. Danny Tickle added the extras.

The Giants fought back but sound defence and a succession of errors prevented any scores. A 30-metre break down centre field by Jermaine McGillvary and then a good burst by Shaun Lunt gave the Giants good field position as the momentum swung the Giants’ way and eventually the score came, Danny Brough’s kick to the in-goal area being touched down by Scott Grix by the posts. Brough’s conversion levelled the scores and they stayed that way until the half-time hooter despite the efforts of both sides; the Vikings being prompted on attack by former Giant Kevin Brown.

The Giants needed to raise their game to break through a stubborn Vikings defence and they started the second half strongly, taking a deserved lead on 46 minutes, with Jermaine McGillvary powering in at the right-hand corner to finish off a fine attacking move.

A Brett Ferres break added to the pressure on the Vikings line and then Michael Lawrence was held just short. On the hour, the home supporters were on their feet cheering a scintillating Giants try, after a brilliant run down centre field by Brough left Vikings defenders grasping at thin air and then an exquisite offload to Joe Wardle put the centre away on a 35-metre dash to the line, touching down wide out on the left. Brough could not add the extras in the windy conditions, but the Giants were now eight points to the good.

On 65 minutes the Vikings showed that they were not finished, when after forcing a goal line drop-out, Manese Manuokafoa forced his way over by the posts.

Danny Tickle’s conversion reduced the deficit to two points but the score gave a spur to the Giants’ resolve and the remainder of the game went their way. Two further tries were scored - Joe Wardle getting his second of the evening on 70 minutes after good work by Craig Huby in the build-up, and four minutes later Eorl Crabtree crashed over from 15 metres out, Lunt having set up the field position with a 30-metre break. Brough added the extras to the last try, and the Giants came close to adding to their score in the last few minutes, Craig Kopczak being held just short after a run from Aaron Murphy.
