Full Time Report

Jordan Rankin made his home Giants debut for the visit of Widnes Vikings to the John Smith's Stadium but Sebastine Ikahihifo Dale Ferguson and Aaron Murphy were missing after injuries picked up last week at Salford with Tyler Dickinson and Adam O'Brien coming in , Jermaine McGillvary also returning after missing the Salford game.

Early pressure from the Giants saw Shannon Wakeman force his way over for the opening try on 5 minutes with Martyn Ridyard adding the extras and 5 minutes later a flowing passing move gave Jermaine McGillvary a stroll over on the right with Martyn Ridyard again adding the extras. The Giants were totally dominant as the Vikings repeatedly coughed up possession and gave away penalties and on 18 minutes a planned move brought Giants supporters to their feet with Ryan Hinchcliffe searing through the defence on an angled run to the line. Martyn Ridyard's conversion gave the Giants a lead of as many points scored as minutes played but the game then got scrappy with errors on both sides but before half time the Giants extended their lead when Adam O'Brien scooted over from dummy half with Martyn Ridyard again converting.

A 24 point half time lead in no way flattered the Giants with sound defence repelling all the Vikings attacks and a cutting edge prising open the Vikings defence at regular intervals.

The second half began scrappily with the Vikings showing an improvement on their first half efforts and it took some 15 minutes before the Giants extended their lead. Darnell McIntosh was the try scorer rounding off a flowing move on the left with the defence stretched. Martyn Ridyard converted.

Two late tries on 71 and 78 minutes respectively completed the scoring with the Vikings again conceding a succession of penalties, Jermaine McGillvary and Ukuma Ta'ai being the try scorers Martyn Ridyard converting the last try..

The 40 point winning margin reflected the total dominance enjoyed by the Giants and to prevent the Vikings scoring was the reward for a fine defensive display.

The result condemned the Vikings to the bottom 4 in the League ladder at the cut-off point and gave the Giants the opportunity of a Top 8 place if they win next Friday at the John Smith's Stadium against Leigh Centurions kick off 8.00pm 14 July.
