Huddersfield Giants 12-40 St Helens

Foster Care

Thursday night’s live Sky TV Betfred Super League match saw the Giants take on League leaders St Helens at a wet and windy John Smith’s Stadium with Aaron Murphy missing from the team which had beaten Wigan at the DW Stadium  last time out and Innes Senior was a late replacement for Jake Wardle. The very strong winds which had hit the region earlier in the day had abated somewhat but conditions were still difficult.

Early penalties conceded by the Giants gave possession and field position to the Saints and they capitalised with a try by the posts to Luke Thompson from James Roby’s short pass, Lachlan Coote adding the extras. The Giants responded quickly forcing a goal line drop on the left in their first spell of possession and then moving the ball swiftly across the line for Jermaine McGillvary to power his way over for a fine try in the right corner, Lee Gaskell adding an excellent conversion in the windy conditions. The game continued at a fast pace with a James Roby break down the centre causing problems but Darnell McIntosh defended strongly.

On 32 minutes though Saints pressure played off, Morgan Knowles touching down by the posts and Lachlan Coote tagging on the conversion.

Again though the Giants responded and an excellent flowing attack saw Jordan Turner cross wide out on the right, Lee Gaskell kicking another excellent conversion to level the scores. On 37 minutes the Giants had the chance to take the lead but the ball was lost on the goal line and the Saints took full advantage surging to the other end with Percival touching down wide out on the left, Lachlan Coote missing the conversion.

The Giants had competed strongly in a fast flowing first half and with a little more composure could have been in front at the interval, but they had suffered a blow with the loss of Joe Wardle to injury.

The second half began disastrously for the Giants conceding 3 consecutive penalties, then a Coote penalty goal followed by a sloppy try to Percival when the Giants failed to deal with a kick to the ingoal area. Lachlan Coote’s conversion giving the Saints a 12 point lead. The Giants were making errors in attack and went further behind to an unconverted Regan Grace try. Matty English then had to leave the field injured and when they sought to respond Jermaine McGillvary’s touchdown was ruled out by the match officials for a forward pass. Late tries to Peyroux and Lomax both converted by Lachlan Coote took the Saints to 40 points and although a run down the left flank raised hopes no further Giants scores were forthcoming, Jordan Turner being denied by the video referee.

It had been a disappointing second half for the Giants with injuries taking their toll. More consistency will be needed next time out when Hull KR are the visitors to the John Smith’s Stadium 22 March 2019 kick off 7.45pm.
