Gun Centre remains a Giant

Jacob Wardle has signed a contract extension that will keep at Huddersfield until 2023.

Jacob Wardle has signed an extended contract that will keep him at the Giants until the end of 2023. The centre has been a standout performer in 2020, featuring for the Claret & Gold in all but one game, scoring in the Giants' Round 1 win over Catalans and scoring the winning try in the famous 12-10 victory away at St Helens.

Jacob Wardle said: "I am happy at the club and with the progress I have made over the past couple of years and that is the biggest reason why I have extended my contract"

"I’ve got a good relationship with the staff and their belief in me made it a much easier decision."

"My aims for the next few years is just to stay consistent and maintain my place in the team but for us as a squad it’s to compete with the top teams and try eventually to win some silverware, and with the squad we’ve got and the culture we’ve built we believe we can."

"While it has been very mentally challenging being at home all day and not knowing when we’ll be back playing, the break has made me eager to get back into training and back playing every week and I’m sure everybody at the club feels the same."

Simon Woolford said: “Jake is a smart kid who has a fantastic understanding of the game. He’s a quiet kid who doesn’t say a lot, but certainly makes a lot of sense when he does.”

“He has shown great faith in the Giants, and we look forward to repaying that faith in continuing to develop our squad into a force capable of competing for BetFred Super League titles.”

“I think Jake has the potential to not only become a representative player, but actually dominate at that level. Physically he’s developed immensely over the past 2 years, with that has come more consistent time on the field and in his performances.”

Richard Thewlis, Managing Director said: “This is a tremendous piece of news for all Giants fans and Jacob is a key part of the squad both now and in the future.

"He had a number of difficult years earlier in his career and we stuck with him as he did with us and its fantastic to see him come through and display the form that everyone in the game has felt he is capable of."

"Anyone fortunate enough to be at St Helens this year will remember for sure his match winning try and indeed some of last year’s showings marked him out as a player of huge potential."

"I am aware that he and a number of our younger players have been watched live this year by scouts from overseas clubs so it is especially pleasing that Jacob and others have remained loyal to the club and their teammates.

"For someone to come through the Scholars and Academy to ultimately gain a starting shirt is testament both to the player and the staff around him and shows once again that the Giants are a club that will give young English players every opportunity to achieve their dreams of playing in Super League.”
