Reload: Nick Fozzard

A look back at the career of a Giants Legend, Nick Fozzard.

When Fozzard left the Rhinos in 1997, he signed for the Giants. He featured just three times in the 1998 season for Huddersfield, as we won four of our 23 league games that season.

He featured a lot more in the following season, playing 27 times in the league, scoring twice. The Giants finished joint bottom with Hull Sharks (now known as Hull FC) that season, with five wins from 30 games.

He also played one game in the Challenge Cup. His two tries that season came against the same club, scoring against Gateshead in round eight, before doing the same again in round 20.

He then featured a further two times for the Huddersfield-Sheffield team the following campaign, as well as one game in the Challenge Cup.

He then moved to Warrington for a brief two-year spell, before he joined St Helens, where he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career.

In his first season in the redvee in 2004, Fozzard featured 25 times for the Saints, scoring two tries. Both tries came on his Saints debut, a 30-16 win over Hull FC. He also featured in all five game of the Saints’ Challenge Cup success, as the redvee beat local rivals, Wigan 32-16 in the final.

He then played 29 times for the Saints the following campaign, scoring one try, which once again came in his first game of the season, as the Saints beat Widnes, 40-18. Saints didn’t reach any major finals during Fozzard’s second season, Fozzard did score twice in the Challenge Cup though, during Saints’ memorable 75-0 win over Wigan.

2006 was a lot better for the Saints, as they won both the Super League title and also the Challenge Cup. Fozzard played 20 times in the league that season, scoring two tries, one against Hull FC and the other being against the Harlequins. Unfortunately for Fozzard though, he wasn’t involved in either of the finals that campaign for St Helens.

He was able to play in both finals in 2007 though, as Saints once again had a good season. He started at prop, as Saints lost 33-6 to the Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford. However, there was a happier ending in the Challenge Cup final, as Fozzard started for Saints during their 30-8 win over the Catalans Dragons at Wembley.

His final season with the Saints was in 2008, in what was a similar season to the previous one. Saints once again won the Challenge Cup at Wembley, this time beating Hull FC, Fozzard wasn’t involved. He did feature in the Grand Final however, one of his nine appearances for the redvee in his final season there, but the Saints were once again beaten by the Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford.

He then left the Saints for a brief spell at Hull KR, but he returned the Saints just one season after his move to East Yorkshire. He played 16 times on his return to the Saints in 2010, scoring one try, but he didn’t feature in St Helens’ Grand Final defeat to the Wigan Warriors.

After his second spell at Saints, he left to join the Castleford Tigers but he hung up his boots after a season back in Yorkshire, due to a severe shoulder injury.
