Huddersfield Giants opened their 2021 BetFred Super League Season off with a defeat as they lost 22-10 to Hull FC at Emereld Headingley Stadium.

Hull got the scoring underway with first half tries courtesy of Jake Connor and Josh Griffin, earning the side a 12-0 half-time lead with two conversions, into a strong wind, from Marc Sneyd.

It was a classic early season game, beset by physical play and a lack of fluency and the Giants struggled to get on the board early in the second half, despite the attempts of the Giants attack to click into gear.

They fell further behind courtesy of a pair of penalties converted by Sneyd. Sneyd also set up half-back partner Josh Reynolds to put the game beyond doubt at the halfway point of the second stanza.

Things went bad to worse for the Giants, as they went down to 12-men due to a sin binning for Kenny Edwards. To their credit, the Giants defence stayed firm in the face of Hull's man advantage, and began to show the fluency that was lacking from them during the game.

Twelve minutes before the end, Ricky Leutele crossed over for the Giants to get them on the board, with Olly Russell agonisingly hitting the post to keep the deficit at 18 points, and played some fluent, attractive rugby in the final minutes of the game, getting their reward with a James Gavet try. Unfortunately, the try came on the buzzer, and the Giants lost their opening game of the Super League Season to the Hull FC.

Huddersfield will now face Catalans Dragons in Round 2 of the Betfred Super League, live on Sky Sports next Saturday afternoon at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
