Giants Women win historic first trophy

Huddersfield Giants Women have made history, becoming the first winners of the Betfred Women's Super League Shield, beating Featherstone Rovers Women 24-22 at Headingley.

Featherstone had led the Betfred Women's Super League Shield table, having beaten the Giants by two points in the regular season, but the Giants were victorious as part of the BWSL Finals Day.

Huddersfield went in front after eight minutes courtesy of Frankie Townend before Rovers levelled through Chloe Billington.

Bridget Campbell got on the board for the Giants to hand them back the lead before a double either side of half-time from Featherstone put them in the lead and looked to have given them the momentum.

The Giants, who came into the game as underdogs, battled hard to hit the front again with a brace from star winger Amelia Brown, and despite a fightback from the leaders in the regular season, the Giants held out and collected the first trophy in their history.

Huddersfield Giants’ Bethan Oates said: “It’s unbelievable. I’m so proud of the girls. It’s been a tough season and to come away with a narrow win, I’m so proud.

“We were all very nervous in that last quarter. We just said keep it in their half and that’s what we did, and when they did get to our half, they made mistakes.
