Rewind: Stanley Gene

Stanley Gene is a bit of a legend around here, playing 76 games in a four-year stint at the Giants between 2001 & 2005, and he's become a bit of a legend for Hull KR too, turning out for the Robins in two separate spells, from 1996 to 2000, and 2007 to 2009.
Gene arrived at the Robins from Lae Bombers when they were in the Rugby League Season Division, and in his initial spell made him a massively popular player at the club, scoring nearly a try a game in his time in East Hull. He had agreed a deal to move to Gateshead Thunder, a merger with Hull FC ensured that the Papuan would move to KR's biggest rivals for the 2000 season.
It would not be a happy spell at the club for Gene, who only made a handful of games, normally from the bench, and he was allowed midway through the 2001 season to be released from his contract to find a new club, which he would, arriving at the John Smith's Stadium in the middle of a Giants season that looked certain to end it relegation. It did, but Gene remained under new coach, Tony Smith.
Gene was a pivotal part in the Giants unbeaten Northern Ford Premiership season in 2002, in which the Giants were only one game away from a perfect record, drawing once all year. Gene scored a magnificent try in the NFP Grand Final against Leigh Centurions, fondly remembered many a Giants fan.

Stanley would continue on with the Giants until 2005, when he would move to Bradford Bulls just in time to win a World Club Challenge alongside fellow Papuan, Marcus Bai against West Tigers. He would return to where it all began in 2007 and now forms part of the coaching staff under his former Head Coach, Tony Smith, at Hull KR.
