There were many reasons to be happy as the Giants visited Salford on Saturday. The Giants were making their first appearance on Channel 4 with a large Giants following of over 1000, as well as new contracts announced for both Ash Golding and Chris McQueen. The first half however would not be.

There were many mistakes from both teams throughout the half but Salford were able to capitalise on theirs, whilst the Giants couldn’t. With the only respite for the Giants in the first half coming from Chris McQueen, the Giant having just signed a new deal with Giants, popped out of a Salford scrum, brilliantly stole the ball one-on-one and ran through for the Giants only score of the first half. Russell would eventually add another two in the final play of the half after a penalty saw Brodie Croft sent to the bin.

But when the first half came to a close Salford had the lead after getting five first half tries. 26 – 6.

The second half was far more palatable for the 1000+ Giants fans who had made the journey. The heat made the game hard as it was but the Giants needed to find another gear to get into the game. For a while, it looked as though the Giants had found that gear.

8 mins into the half and Sam Hewitt went across the line. Leroy broke through the line on the right, offloaded to Theo who found Sam and Sam stormed his way over the line. Russell converted. 26 – 12

Less than a minute later and Sam was in yet again, this time a piece of individual brilliance and a fantastic over the shoulder finish was enough. 26 - 6.

After that, chances came and went for the Giants, the ball was dropped multiple times by both sides making the game very end to end. But another converted try and drop goal for Salford meant the game would finish Salford 33 – 16 Giants.
