Giants 2023 Leadership Roles Confirmed

Huddersfield Giants are delighted to confirm that Luke Yates and Leroy Cudjoe will make up the two senior leadership roles within the Giants squad for the coming 2023 Season.

In 2022, squad talisman and natural leader Luke Yates was appointed as Team Captain for the Giants, taking charge of the on-field leadership responsibilities. The role will see 'Captain Fantastic' continue in the position he was given last year, a position which the Australian undoubtedly exceeded in. Yates led the Giants to a Challenge Cup final for the first time in 13-years and helped maintain a high level of performance throughout the season which saw the Giants finish 3rd in the Super League, their highest league position since 2013.

Yates played in 28 games for Huddersfield in the 2022 season, making countless tackles and scoring eight tries, including the stunning long distance effort away at Hull KR in round 16.

There is no doubt that Luke Yates will continue to be a source of inspiration to all the players on and off the field at the club and will help continue to take to the club forward into an exciting 2023 season.

There has however been a change to the Club Captain. Giants legend, Michael Lawrence was appointed as Club Captain by Ian Watson back in the 2021 season. Since Ian Watson's arrival he has repeated the mantra that "You want someone who epitomises what the club represents on and off the field." as a representative of the club. Bruno was a perfect representative of this ideal, but after making a move to Bradford Bulls late in 2022, the club needed someone else to step into this position who again embodies what it means to be a Huddersfield Giant.

The Giants are lucky to have so many leaders and club legends within their ranks, however, no one was more fit to fill the role left by Michael Lawrence than a man who has been with him every step of the way and who once again, knows the importance of the Giants and Rugby League to the Huddersfield Community, a man who dedicates his time to helping develop the youth of not only the Giants but also the at community club Moldgreen ARLFC. It is of course, Leroy Cudjoe.

At 34, Leroy is one of the more senior members of the Giants squad and has been a shining light in Huddersfield since he first took to the pitch in Claret and Gold back in 2008. Leroy has made over 337 appearances for the club, played in two Challenge Cup finals, scored 130 tries, played for England 10 times and of course was a part of the 2013 League Leaders Shield Winning side.

And despite being one of the older members in the squad his will, effort and fitness has certainly continued to shine. In the 2022 Season Leroy played the most games and scored the most tries in a single season, for himself, since 2016. Showing that there is still no stopping this true club legend.

Leroy Cudjoe is truly an embodiment of everything that it takes to be not only a fantastic sporting professional but also a brilliant human being.
