MATCH REPORT | CASTLEFORD TIGERS

Huddersfield Giants were defeated by a full-strength Castleford Tigers side 48-10, as Ian Watson used the game to give valuable minutes to the younger players of his squad.

Former Giant Alex Mellor opened the scoring early on, after a fast break from Niall Evalds cut through a gap and fed the back-rower through to touch down.

Castleford were then over the line once again, as back-to-back Six Again’s were awarded and Paul McShane took full advantage, twisting over to score and put Castleford 12-0 to the good.

Giants were then awarded two penalties for infringements, which saw Tui Lolohea spot a gap, allowing Leory Cudjoe to acrobatically score and get Huddersfield on the board.

Both sides enjoyed attacking field as the half drew on, but it was to be Castleford who made it pay once again, as a quick play the ball saw the ball floated out to Bureta Faraimo who rounded Jake Bibby to score.

That was all for the first half, with Lee Radford’s men leading at the break 16-4.

After the interval, it was Ian Watson’s men who would score first, through Innes Senior who took advantage of some great play from Tui Lolohea and Olly Russell to send him in at the corner.

Soon after however, Bureta Faraimo grabbed his second for Castleford, as he smashed his way through the Giants defence and scored, extending the home sides lead once again.

The winger would then go on to assist a try, as a Ian Watson rang the changes, Castleford took a stranglehold on proceedings, Mahe Fonua crossing in the corner.

Paul McShane, the beneficiary of several offloads, crossed the line and raced over underneath the posts, leaving the kick to Nathan Massey who slotted over the two points on his testimonial day.

Gareth Widdop sent a long kick up into the clouds, and Tui claimed but then had the ball stolen, which saw Bureta Faraimo claim his hat trick in the corner.

Two more scores then followed for the home side, through Mahe Fonua and Albert Vete, as the full-strength Tigers took advantage of a youthful Tigers side.

The full-time hooter sounded, as Castleford Tigers ran out 48-10 winners, on an afternoon where we celebrated the career of Nathan Massey and Ian Watson used this game to hand valuable minutes to his younger members of the squad.
