MATCH PREVIEW | DEWSBURY RAMS

Ahead of our first home friendly of 2023, we're going to preview the action that awaits us at the John Smiths Stadium!

Giants Squad News

After being defeated by a strong Castleford side on Sunday, Ian Watson could hand minutes to players that sat on the sidelines at Castleford, such as Chris McQueen, Nathan Peats and Olly Wilson.

Sam Halsall was replaced early on by Leory Cudjoe with an injury to his leg, with progress being made on the former Wigan Youngster.

This game marks the final Pre-Season fixture before the Giants' opening round vs Warrington, with squad news expected to be revealed on Friday afternoon ahead of the Sunday kick-off.

The Opposition Team

Dewsbury have played two pre-season fixtures so far, a 36-16 loss to Bradford Bulls at their home, the Flair Stadium, and Batley Bulldogs where they narrowly lost out on a close heavy woollen derby.

Similar to the Giants, their season starts a little later due to the Betfred League 1 scheduling, meaning that this is also their second pre-season fixture as they look towards an immediate return to the Betfred Championship.

The Rams gave a strong account of themselves vs Bradford, but ultimately the class from the Championship side saw them rack up a number of tries, before Dewsbury found their way over the line for two consolation tries.

It is expected that Rams' Head Coach, former Super League half Liam Finn will select a strong Rams side, as they prepare to open their Betfred League 1 Campaign shortly, with his side looking to test themselves against quality Super League opposition.

Key Men

Dewsbury Rams, despite being relegated, still boast a number of quality and experienced players in their ranks, such as 40-year-old half Paul Sykes, who signed a new one-year deal to play on as he looks to guide the club back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

They also have a familiar face at hooker in Reiss Butterworth, who signed for the Giants in 2019 from the Bradford Bulls, but then joined Dewsbury Rams permanently in 2021.

Sunday's game could be the Giants fans' first glimpse at some of the new signings that have joined the Claret and Gold, so ensure you secure your place and buy your ticket using this link.

Last Season

The Giants also played Dewsbury Rams in pre-season in 2022, defeating them 42-12, only this time it was at the home of the Rams, the Flair Stadium, with Jack Ashworth (3), Olly Russell, Joe Greenwood, Ricky Leutele and Jermaine McGillvary (2) scoring on that day.
