IAN WATSON INTERVIEW PRE DEWSBURY

Ahead of the final pre-season fixture, we sat down with Head Coach Ian Watson to discuss a number of topics!

With today's friendly being the final game before the start of the 2023 Betfred Super League, at the Season Launch, we caught up with Ian Watson for his thoughts on the friendly and the start of the season.

"We've extended our pre-season on the back of not playing in Round 1, with the final hit out being against Dewsbury who will provide a strong test for us, we'll then start to really taper down and focus on the processes and systems we've been building ahead of the season in two weeks time.

"There has been a big focus on keeping everyone fit and ready for the start of the season, getting the processes right and making the best use of what we could, especially after the Bradford game was called off, it wasn't ideal but we've made it work.

"The Dewsbury game will be used differently to what it would usually be used as, with it being basically a full strength team."

On recruitment for 2023, Ian Watson added that he didn't want to make too many changes but he is happy with where the squad is at.

"It's fair to say I didn't want to make too many changes but losing players allowed us make some tweaks to the squad in the off-season, I'm really happy with the recruitment and where we stand going into 2023."

Watto also commented on new signing Esan Marsters, who could make his first appearance in the Giants colours, today vs Dewsbury.

"Esan has got great ability, he was tearing up the NRL at the young age which shows the talent he possesses, he had a couple of seasons that didn't show his true potential, but we believe we can get him back to his best and we'll have a real quality player on our hands when we do."

On Pre-Season, Ian also touched upon players taking part in the World Cup and how they're looking in training.

"It was difficult having a few players only back for a couple of weeks, such as Tui (Lolohea) and Chris (Hill) who were give extended breaks given their involvement, but we have the quality already here with us, so they will fit right in and be up-to speed in no time."

We also discussed with our Head Coach the role some of the younger players will play in 2023, and how the future looks for them during the season.

"We had a lot of young guys play last season, we want to continue that this season and the younger guys need to be ready and grab the opportunity with both hands when it comes, as we have some quality young lads within our squad.

"On loans, we want to have a little look at Kieran Rush, he's been phenomenal in pre-season and in training, we want to help him develop and maybe look at the Championship for Kieran, where he can really grow as a player."

Finally, looking ahead to the Betfred Super League, Ian gave his thoughts on what is shaping up to be a competitive league in 2023.

"The main aim is we have to be consistent, I'd say that we were outstanding overall last season, and we're looking to replicate that and have another great season."

The full interview will be available to listen on Spotify during the week.
