Heritage Certificates | Salford Red Devils (H)

Before today’s clash between the Giants and the Red Devils, let’s focus on the former Huddersfield RLFC players who are set to receive their Heritage Certificates.

Joe Cyrus Heritage Number - 814

Joe was a homegrown talent who was first recognised when playing for the Huddersfield Supporters Under 19 team before signing for the Giants in 1973.

He had to wait until the 17th  November 1973 to make his debut in which the Giants defeated Doncaster 33-5 at Fartown.

Cyrus soon proved himself to be a speedy winger and a threat to every opposition he faced by scoring 19 tries in his first 60 appearances for the Giants.

Joe’s keen eye for the try line paid off in the 1977-78 season where his nine tries helped Huddersfield reach promotion to the first division.

Unfortunately, this ended up being his final season after Joe was forced to retire due to a serious shoulder injury.

Dave Hoosen Heritage Number - 765

Dave’s relationship with Huddersfield Giants began on the 27th of April 1967 when he joined from Mixenden Amateur Rugby League Club.

Originally when Hoosen arrived he played as a fullback, however, for the majority of his time in claret and gold he converted to a winger. Dave started his time playing for the A team before earning his senior debut against Featherstone Rovers on 15th December 1968.

Hoosen’s most productive season came in 1972/73 where he scored 16 tries and kicked 49 goals leaving him in serious contention with current England coach Wayne Bennet for the goal-kicking role.

Hoosen later found success with the Giants in the 1974/75 season by collecting a Second Division championship medal.

Dave proved himself a loyal member to the Giants over the years which was rewarded with his own testimonial in 1977.

His final game for the Giants came on 6th January 1980 against Doncaster at Fartown. At the end of his Giants career, he had played twelve seasons for the club, making 214 appearances, scoring 67 tries and kicking 102 goals.

Alan Greenwood – Heritage Number 844

After completing trials at Halifax, Alan signed for the Giants after leaving Mixenden Amateur Rugby League Club.

Proving himself as an agile scrum half, Alan’s senior debut for Huddersfield came in a 33-15 victory against Blackpool in September 1977.

During his career at Fartown, Greenwood made 60 appearances for Huddersfield, contributing 8 tries.  After playing at Huddersfield for over 6 years, Alan’s final senior appearance for the club came against Rochdale on the 8th of April 1984.

After leaving the club, he continued to play Rugby League with Siddal ARLFC.
