Giants vs London Broncos Match Preview

The Giants will return to the John Smith’s Stadium on the 28th of January in their second pre-season fixture as they face newly promoted Super League side, London Broncos.

The Giants will return to the John Smith’s Stadium on the 28th of January in their second pre-season fixture as they face newly promoted Super League side, London Broncos.

The last fixture between the two was on the 22nd of April 2019, when the Giants won a close-fought contest defeating the Broncos 24-19 with tries scored by Jermaine McGillvary, Alex Mellor and Scott Grix. It was 4 clinical conversions from Oliver Russell that made the difference in that game.

This will be the Giants' second outing of three pre-season fixtures after putting on a dominant display against Dewsbury Rams at the weekend, defeating the local side 36–0.  Ian Watson took a strong squad for our first game as we saw first-team debuts of new signings Hugo Salabio and Elliot Wallis as well as debuts for youth academy prospects Jack Hudson and Darius Carter who got a good fifteen minutes under their belt.

There was also an impressive performance from Esan Marsters as he scored a hat-trick of tries in the wind and rain while Kieran Rush, Elliot Wallis, Harvey Livett and Sam Hewitt also got in on the act.

The full match was recorded and is available along with highlights and a match report across our social media accounts.

Ian Watson will be planning a similar performance at home this weekend with players such as Adam Clune, Jack Murchie, Jake Connor, Kevin Naiqama and Adam Milner all eligible for selection.

London Broncos make their return to the Super League for the 2024 campaign after they finished 5th in the Betfred Championship last season securing promotion through the playoffs defeating Featherstone Rovers 26-36 in the semi-final, before defeating Toulouse Olympique 18-14 in the Grand Final.

Mike Eccles was named the 2023 Championship coach of the year and will be hoping this fixture is a good test for the Broncos as they prepare for a long and tough 2024 season. The Broncos started their pre-season campaign last Sunday as they faced a very good Castleford Tigers side who were held to a 14-14 score line.  They were trailing 14-6 to Castleford at half-time, but they put on an impressive second-half performance with tries from Oliver Leyland and Hakim Miloudi to earn a well-deserved draw. Their 2024 campaign starts on the 16th of February away against St Helens.

This will be another tough test for the Giants before they finish their pre-season campaign away against Castleford Tigers on the 4th of February.
