Giants Women vs Wigan Warriors | Match Report

Huddersfield Giants Women were defeated 102-0 by Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Women’s Super League Round 3.

The Warriors ran riot in the form of Mary Coleman and Victoria Molyneux, but it was Mary Coleman's 5-try rout that stole the show.

Rachel Thompson opened the neverending account in the 6th minute.

Anna Davies exploited the Giants’ clunky defence to pick up a pacy brace, Mary Coleman followed suit. Scrum-half Emma Knowles handed easy conversions given the close proximity to the sticks.

24-0, Frankie Townend spotted an opportunity for the response with a clean sprint 40m out of the Wigan half. A kick over the top of the defence line plays later increased the chances of a score but was uncapitalised.

Handed the ball from a scoring position, Thompson was in at the double.

The Cherry & Whites’ trapped the Giants into a Goal Line Drop Out in the 30th minute. Tiring from the pounding attack, the wall would eventually cave in on the left to Grace Banks. 36-0 with Knowles’ conversion.

Former England loose Vicky Molyneux, Knights’ Coleman rounded off the first half with converted tries letting Wigan enjoy a 48-0 lead.

HALF TIME

Just 2 minutes into the second half the Warriors were back on attack. Davies grabbed the hat-trick with a slice through the line.

Coleman soon completed her 5-try milestone with Molyneux adding another to her tally.

Australian import Rease Casey was a late addition to the Wigan 2024 squad, though made up for it with her rapid break from the halfway line for 4 points.

Warriors’ Jenna Forbister on debut was sure to make it a memorable one, cutting through the line from an overlap in the left corner.

Centre Kaitlin Hilton and academy product Isabel Rowe wormed their way out of tackles to cross for the whitewash in the final few minutes.

Coleman, completing her 5th try of the game, and Emma Knowles’ conversion brought up the century for Wigan on the stroke of full-time, resulting in a 102-0 defeat.

Lori Halloran’s Giants will next be in action at Laund Hill on 26th May, 2pm, taking on York Valkyrie.
