Giants Women vs York Valkyrie | Match Preview

Huddersfield Giants Women take on York Valkyrie this Sunday (2pm) at Laund Hill in Round 4 of the Betfred Women's Super League.

PREVIOUS FIXTURES ⚔️

The Giants have taken on the Valkyrie on 4 previous occasions, the most recent a 60-4 defeat at the LNER Community Stadium last September. Amelia Brown from kick-off striking in the right corner though unconverted by Ellie Thompson.

Last time out at Laund Hill versus York, the Giants contributed well in a 48-8 scoreline. Brown and Lois Naidole were able to exploit the defense with Thompson kicking 1 from 2.

GIANTS WOMEN UPDATE 📖

Following a raw 102-0 thrashing from Wigan, Lori Halloran’s side have been working hard behind the scenes to rectify the performance.

During the break, Jacob Holmes’ U19’s side grabbed a well-deserved 26-4 win. Jess Lumb opened the scoring in the left edge, and forward Maddie Hutchison followed soon after. 

It was Mollie Iceton’s 4-try rout that stole the show, a display of great athletic effort. Cutting through the middle for her first, the winger then backed it up with a length-of-the-field try.

Captain Ruby Tyson, included in the senior side, was able to provide the kick on just one occasion.

THE OPPOSITION ⚔️

York come off a 32-2 Women’s Challenge Cup Semi-Final to St Helens once more, making this the right time to pounce on the Valkyrie at fortress Laund Hill.

In terms of pre-season transfers, Lindsay Anfield was handed a double departure from prop Grace Field and winger Liv Whitehead who moved to rivals Leeds Rhinos.

Former Giant Chloe Smith and winger Kacey Davies opted for opportunities to newly promoted Featherstone Rovers. Veteran forward Aimee Staveley announced her retirement following victory in the Grand Final.

They weren’t short on signings, swooping for former St Helens back Eboni Partington and Warrington Wolves half Lucy Eastwood. Fijian back Manuqalo Komaitai also signed for the side though has enjoyed dual registration at Sheffield Eagles in recent weeks.

Kelsey Gentles returns following the birth of her child, in an interesting move from wing to prop. Alex Stimpson returns to the squad after harbouring injury for 2 years.

Ex-Canberra Raiders hooker Remi Wilton has taken on the #9 role after Sinead Peach announced her pregnancy.

VENUE AND ENTRY DETAILS 🏟️

Adults can enter for £6 with Under-16s for £2. Laund Hill operates a pay-on-the-gate system with both cash and card payments available. Team sheets are available on the gate for free.

Parking is free, though will be limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Dogs are not allowed at Laund Hill.

Food and drink will be available from the clubhouse.
