Robert ‘Bob’ Mitchell

Huddersfield Giants were saddened to hear of the passing of former player Robert ‘Bob’ Mitchell.

Huddersfield Giants were saddened to hear of the passing of former player Robert ‘Bob’ Mitchell.

Robert (Bob) Mitchell was signed from the Shaw Cross Boys Club on 30 March 1968. The Dewsbury boys club was a prolific source of players for the professional game and Bob followed, amongst others, Mick Sullivan and David Heppleston to Fartown. A rangy 6ft second row forward Bob made his first team debut in the claret and gold in a 19 points to 14 victory against Oldham on 17 August 1968. Bob made 25 first team appearances during 1968/69 and 1969/70, scoring one try. His final first team game was a 32 points to 5 victory against Doncaster on 24 October 1969.

Bob was a classic car enthusiast and once featured on TV’s Men and Motors with his beloved 1937 Packard convertible. He kept in touch with his former colleagues at the Giants and his most recent involvement with the club was when he did the Golden Gamble draw as one of our Legends against the Catalans in August 2024.

Bob’s Heritage Number is 757.

Our thoughts go out to Bob’s family and friends at this sad time.
