Allen Jones

Huddersfield Giants are saddened to hear about the passing of former Coach Allen Jones.

Allen Jones first became associated with the Huddersfield club, at the time known as the Barracudas, when he was appointed as scout under then coach, Chris Forster. He was appointed second team coach in January 1987 with Jack Addy in charge of the first team.

Addy resigned in March 1988 when the club were fourth from the bottom of the second division, and Colts coach Neil Whittaker and Jones were appointed as caretaker coaches for the first team until the end of the 1987/88 season.

Their positions were confirmed for the start of the 1988/89 season. The Examiner correspondent was scathing about the situation at the club writing after a record 94-12 loss at Castleford that  "Whittaker and Jones have had to operate in conditions few would tolerate and the side is probably the weakest in history"

A consortium led by Mick Murphy took over the club in November 1988 and appointed former Dewsbury stand off, Nigel Stephenson, as player coach, parting company with Allen Jones. In his youth, Jones had trials with several Lancashire clubs. His playing career as a centre or second row was halted by a bad ankle injury at the age of 19.

Having also coached at Keighley, Allen loved watching and coaching Rugby. He regularly kept his eyes out for the Huddersfield scores and Allen's family have very fond memories of the Club.

Our thoughts are with Allen's family and friends.
