Full Time Report

A glorious sunny afternoon greeted the teams for this West Yorkshire derby at Wakefield, with the Giants seeking a third consecutive Super League victory to move into the top four of the table.

The Giants started in devastating fashion with three Scott Grix tries in the first nine minutes, the fastest hat-trick in the Super League era.

The first score came on 63 seconds with incisive passing on the left creating the space for Brett Ferres to put Grix over and then three minutes later Jamie Ellis broke through to send the supporting Grix over again on the left.

And finally, on nine minutes a Craig Hall high bomb bounced off Aaron Murphy in the Giants 20 into the hands of the Giants full-back who raced away on a 75-metre scorching run to touch down in the left-hand corner. Danny Brough converted all three tries and the Giants had an 18-point lead inside the first 10 minutes.

Little had been seen of the Wildcats attack but on 16 minutes they registered their first score, with Collis crossing on the left - Hall failing with the conversion attempt.

Seven minutes later the Giants failed to close down Ali Lauitiiti on a cross-field run and he created space for Danny Kirmond to exploit and go over for a try. Hall again missed the conversion.

The Giants had lost Jermaine McGillvary to a shoulder injury shortly before the second try and were now finding the home side a totally different proposition to earlier in the match, but gradually regained their composure and began to create further scoring opportunities before the half-time hooter, however, none of which were taken.

An Ellis long kick was chased and caught by Leroy Cudjoe but Jack Hughes could not hold his inside pass and then Brough’s short kick almost prised open the defence before Eorl Crabtree was held up over the line.

The Giants had eased up after their blistering start and the Wildcats had shown their scoring potential with their two tries and soon after the restart they narrowed the gap to four points. After forcing a goal line drop-out, Jordan Crowther touched down, with Hall adding the extras.

The visitors had made a sloppy start to the half with penalties being conceded and handling errors but a strong run by Murphy changed things round and created field position from where Brough put Ferres in for a try by the posts - the skipper adding the extras.

It was now the Wildcats’ turn to make a succession of errors and concede penalties as the Giants took full control of the encounter recording three further tries in the last 13 minutes, clinically capitalising on the errors.

Brough touched down a loose ball on 67 minutes and added the extras before Leroy Cudjoe took full advantage of another dropped ball to run 40 metres for his try, Brough again tagging on the extras.

As the game got a bit tetchy, Ellis kicked a penalty goal on 74 minutes before adding the extras to Ukuma Ta’ai’s last-minute try to complete the scoring, the Giants finishing with a 30 point advantage.

It had been a deserved success and with more steadiness, particularly in the second part of the first half, the margin could have been greater. Steadiness and composure will certainly be needed next time out this coming Friday at Warrington.
