New signing from Wests Tigers Jordan Rankin made a debut appearance for the Giants at the AJ Bell Stadium at full back against the Salford Red Devils but Jermaine McGillvary sustained an injury in training the previous day and missed out, Darnell McIntosh taking his place on the wing.

The Red Devils put the kick off out on the full but the Giants lost possession following the resulting penalty and then sustained an injury blow on 4 minutes with the loss of Sebastine Ikahihifo but still took an early lead 1 minute later with Leroy Cudjoe touching down after the ball had been moved from one side of the field to the other, Danny Brough adding the extras.

A run from Brough and inside pass almost split the defence down the centre but the ball was knocked on and this was the prelude to a swing of momentum to the home side and a series of goal line drop outs being conceded by the Giants. 4 consecutive sets of tackles were defended but eventually on 22 minutes Sa’u went over on the left after good work by Lui, Dobson’s conversion levelling the scores.

Shortly afterwards the Red Devils took the lead. Following a penalty Lui  touched down and this was followed by a Welham try with Dobson converting both to put his side 12 points to the good and 30 minutes gone. On 32 minutes though a Danny Brough 40/20 led to the Giants having a spell of possession and an Aaron Murphy try in the left corner, Danny Brough failing with the conversion attempt.

There were no further scores before half time though Dobson missed a straight penalty kick on the hooter.

After a good first 10 minutes the Giants had been second best, had conceded too many penalties which had meant a serious lack of possession and virtually no field position.

The Giants needed a good start to the second half but Michael Dobson’s 40/20 ensured that the Red Devils maintained the ascendancy and the first 20 minutes saw further tries for O’Brien, Sa’u and Murdoch-Masila the second of which was converted by Dobson.

An Injury to Aaron Murphy did not help the Giants cause but the last 15 minutes saw a revival and tries from Kruise Leeming and Darnell McIntosh the second converted by Danny Brough gave the strong following of Giants supporters something to cheer and remember on what had otherwise been a disappointing afternoon.

Injuries had disrupted the Giants but a much-improved performance will be needed on Friday night 7 July 2017 at the John Smith’s Stadium kick off 8.00pm when Widnes are the visitors.
