Claret and Gold to begin Super League XVIII with tallest and heaviest forward line in club’s history

The 2013 Super League season will see the Huddersfield Giants create another piece of history as the club are set to field the biggest set of forwards since records at the Giants began – So make sure YOU witness it first hand by buying your 2013 Season Ticket NOW!

With the Giants recently appointing a second full-time Physio for the first ever time, the club will re-write the record books again when the new-look, colossal forward line face off against the Saints on February 2nd 2013.

The Claret and Gold forwards were already of an impressive stature with one of Super League’s biggest props Eorl Crabtree weighing in at 115KG and standing gigantic at 6ft 5in, Larne Patrick (104KG, 6ft), Dale Ferguson (103KG, 6ft), Jason Chan (103KG, 6ft) and the powerful International Luke O’Donnell who stands at 6ft 1in and weighs in at 101KG.

But with the recruitment of huge specimens’ Stuart Fielden, Craig Kopczak, Anthony Mullally, Brett Ferres, Ukuma Ta’ai  and youngsters (who look less than young) Nathan Mason and Peter Aspinall, the Giants are not only looking fierce, but will possess the heaviest and biggest pack in Giants history.

Wales skipper, Kopczak, who stands at a ‘giant’ 6ft 4in and weighs 112KG will potentially line up alongside the 6ft 5in, 111KG mountain that is Mullally. Not to mention, former International, Fielden, who arrives with 104KG of pure muscle and an added 6ft 3in of height. Add a 106KG, 6ft 2in, Brett Ferres to a 105KG, 6ft 1in Tongan powerhouse, Ta’ai, and opposition defences really will be quickly made aware of the Giants size and strength.

Add further the rangy ‘youngster’ Nathan Mason’s 104KG, 6ft 5in frame and physique to the fray and the 'Giants' forwards really are living up to their name. If you want to add the powerful backs, such as Leroy Cudjoe and Michael Lawrence to that list the 17 biggest players would weigh in at a staggering 1765KG!

Giants Head Coach Paul Anderson, a former prop himself, knows how important a powerful forward line can be.

“When you look at these boys running around the training field it’s a pretty impressive sight,” he said.

“We certainly won’t be lacking in size and strength, and I’ve made no secret of what I thought about the way we were physically dominated in the Hull FC game and how it was something that had to change, he continued.

“Stuart, Craig and Anthony are already making their considerable presence felt, and I’m excited to see them being joined by Ukuma,”

“He’s another very big, strong physical man, who’s also very aggressive and will add a tremendous amount to our pack,”

“He can play at prop or back-row and we will work out how to utilise his skills best during pre-season.”

And Giants Head Conditioner Greg Brown will continue to put all the Giants players through their paces in pre-season and he gave an insight into how he will maintain their strength and power.

“I’ve screened a lot of players here over the years, and there’s no doubt this group is the biggest we’ve ever had. Fortunately, they’re also very fit as well."

“From our performance testing and medical screening, it is clear the boys have looked after themselves in the offseason,” he said.

“The first few weeks of pre-season have started well and we are now out of the preparation phase of training and they have now started training for real,” he continued.

“The performance testing results dictate the volume of the training and we can individualise training to each player. The players that are a touch behind in fitness, carrying extra body fat or a little down on strength will do additional sessions to get back up to speed, which allows us to get them where they need to be to start the year,” he added.

“It's been really good to work with new Physio Dave O’Sullivan and his medical screening and feedback so far have been invaluable. Matthew Green is again working hard with the rehab players and the majority are now returning back to squad to join the rest of the boys.”
