Jake Mamo is back on the scoresheet! The Huddersfield Giants full back scored his first try of 2018 as he helped Giants to a 28-16 victory and spoke of his delight after the final whistle:

“I am delighted. It’s been a while to get off it but I’ve finally got it! To get the first win away from home was important but to get the win in general was important. We were one win in four and if we’d have been one win in five it would have been a horrible start.

"We’ve still got a lot of work to do but to get the win like we did there was definitely what we needed.”

The Giants had led 24-0 with just 20 minutes to go before surviving a late Widnes fightback, and the Aussie believes the team showed good character to hold on to the two points:

“For the most part we were pretty good but we were both down to 12 with a bit left. It was a lot of scrambled play from side to side. When theyre chasing they got the tries and it wasn’t what we wanted but we go away from it and take the positives.

“It doesn’t really matter how you win, as long as you win. We can go to a video session and try and get better like we do each week.

Mamo also reserved special praise to the Claret and Gold faithful who were in full voice throughout the match:

“They play a massive part. I did a fan talk on Tuersday night and you don’t understand what it does to have the fans there. We were getting some stick from the Widnes fans all night and it was good to have our fans behind our backs – especially when we were defending on our own line as they urged us on. They really are great.”
