Michael Lawrence previews tonight’s match away to Castleford Tigers

Huddersfield Giants Club stalwart Michael Lawrence discussed tonight’s trip to face Castleford Tigers, kick-off 7:45pm at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle in Round 5 of the Super 8s.

Having only ever played professionally for the Claret and Gold, Lawrence is set to make his 250th career appearance tonight, and having made his debut against Warrington Wolves in 2007, Lawrence spoke about his first match:

“I can remember it was pretty quick. I came off the bench for about two minutes against Warrington in 2007, I think I touched the ball once and then the final hooter went. I thought Super League is pretty easy if this is all you have to do!

“But, yes, I’ve played a lot of games in between then and now and have a lot of fond memories as well.”

Speaking ahead of tonight’s match against Castleford, Lawrence discussed the Giants’ prior results and what he’s expecting from the Tigers:

“Castleford will be pushing and trying to crank it up now, getting ready for their semi-final in about a month’s time.

“Obviously, we lost last week and the top-four was a game too far for us so we’re focused on this performance and playing well.

“We feel like over the last four or five months with our performances we’ve earned a lot of credibility in the league and respect and we don’t want to undo that in our last few performances. We want to put good ones in and finish off well.

“We’ve come close and been competitive in the last two games. If we’d have been a bit smarter in different parts of those matches we could have come away with the two points. We just have to make sure we give ourselves the best chance of winning.

Lawrence also discussed the impact of Head Coach Simon Woolford and revealed his excitement for the 2019 campaign:

“Since Simon’s come in I’ve felt really excited. It’s the first time in a couple of years that I’ve felt really excited about what we’re building at the Club from the coaching team at the top to the playing group we have.

“I’m very excited about finishing this year, then pre-season and what we can achieve next year, I think we’ll just go from strength to strength and get even better.”

Tonight’s match will pit the Wardle brothers against eachother, and having played alongside Joe Wardle during his time at Huddersfield, Lawrence spoke about facing his former teammate:

“It’d be good to see Joe again, obviously he’s a great player and plays the game tough so it will be a tough battle. He’s already been talking to Jake, his brother, this morning and it will be the first time they get to face each other so I know Jake’s looking forward to that and getting one up on him as well.”
